The stylish and fast 1963 Avanti was the last ditch hope for Studebaker. The automaker was on the verge of bankruptcy. It needed a hot seller to remain in business. Studebaker's president called in famed designer Raymond Loewy and within weeks the automaker had a car. Although the $5000 fiberglass Avanti was just too expensive for most car buyers and it didn't save Studebaker --- the Avanti would live on. Over the next three decades, Avanti lovers would try to keep the dream alive, buying the company and making changes here and there to the timeless design.

On this episode of The Fast Lane Classics, we take a look at one of the most unbelievable American Cars to come from the roaring sixties: The Studebaker Avanti. It was the early 1960's and one of America's quirky car companies was on the ropes. The company was Studebaker and sales of their somewhat dowdy and conservative cars was decline. So what did the designers at Studebaker decide to do? They swung for the fences and designed and eventually built the Studebaker Avanti. Was it the right car but the wrong company or was it the right company but the wrong car? The fiberglass body Avanti didn't save the company but Studebaker had built and designed a car that looked like it was from 2003 instead of 1963. Check out another Classics Revealed as TFLcar brings you another up close and personal look at a classic cool car.

Welcome to Studebaker Week's last video. The stunning and European looking Studebaker Avanti finally debuts almost a year late due to production problems. The Studebaker Avanti was a personal luxury coupe built by the Studebaker Corporation between June 1962 and December 1963
